This is a great intro course. The materials is super interesting, the professors and tfs are super nice and the course is not stressful and doesn't take up a lot of time outside of class. Everyone at Harvard should take this class.
Please take this class; It is a gem and very laidback.
This is a very politically correct Af Am course with almost a white–centered discussion of oppression
Be attentive because the information learned in this course can truly change the way you perceive the environment around you.
The section and the tfs (Panashe Chigumadzi and Katilau Mbindyo) were great!! Hammonds' lecture topics were interesting but sometimes delivered blandly.
Take this class!
.Lecture is the best part of this course, you really learn so much and the material is always interesting.
I always learned something new
This is an amazing course and I learned so much. Even if you feel like you've covered a lot of the topics on the syllabus in prior studies, you will still learn and in section you'll grow so much!
If you don't have to take this class as a requirement I honestly would not recommend it. The lecture–style format in my opinion makes it very challenging to actually retain material and you'll do a lot of self–teaching. With that being said the readings are very good and you certainly will expand your current view of Blackness and Black studies.
Course was awesome to open my eyes to how Eurocentric and White–centric our world is. Lectures were awesome to listen to, but a bit stressful when you realize that recordings are hard to find/hard to look up afterwards and lecture slides aren't posted online.
Take this class especially if professor gates is teaching. He has so much wisdom.

Taking this class serves as a good introductory course for African American history. A lot of the material in this course may be things that you have already learned, but if you are considering concentrating in or getting a secondary in African American studies then I think that this is a good introduction to the department.
The class isn't difficult, but your experience can be TF dependent.
I do not think you'll regret taking this course. It's a broad introduction to one of the most rich, tragic, and fruitful part of American society.
While this class is very interesting, informative, and important, you might want to opt out if topics centered around Black oppression make you considerably depressed/angry/uncomfortable etc.
you will learn so many disturbing things, be prepared to be outraged and upset, do not pass up on this class!
This is a must–take class! They make it really accessible and everyone can learn from the material they teach and the conversations that the class fosters.
I enjoyed this course. Readings can be long and lectures are information heavy, but lecture recordings or slides are not provided, so you have to take very thorough notes to answer very specific quiz questions. I found the essays to be appropriately challenging.
I would definitely take this class if your interested in AAAS. Great introduction, and not too much reading or work.
Brilliant professors and guests, great readings and conversation, provides such essential context for understanding the country we live in.
