The style of this class is unique. It is almost worth taking simply for the conversational, debate–esque banter that Prof Unger and Prof Stauffer engage in. Both of them approach the lectures with an open mind; they have a structure that extends just so far as relating to the week's readings, but besides that, it is more free form. I found that this allowed for an extremely engaging lecture. You get to avoid the typical rigidly structured, and repetitive slide–show style of most lectures nowadays. That being said, the profs often go on pretty intense tangents and sometimes you walk out of lecture feeling disoriented and confused, unsure how you would use that content for an assignment.
if you are an undergraduate, go to section its super helpful and you learn so much and you really get the chance to speak your mind and explore why you think the way that you do
Overall, this is a course that makes you think broadly, though less deeply. The readings themselves are interesting to start conversation, but most of our productive classtime came from lecture or section– based discussion. Since it is co–taught with law school students, it can be a bit daunting to speak up sometimes – but valuable to do so. The only other thing I will say is that sometimes Professor Unger may present a strong assumption that the entire class that day is built on (i.e. there is no middle class in the U.S.), so if these kinds of details are important to you, you might be frustrated.
