TAKE THIS CLASS!! Dr Martin is a beautiful human who truly cares about the subject and wants to share her interests with everyone. The assignments are all reasonable and the chocolate tastings make it doubly worth it. Excellent choice for an easier load / senior spring
Will always be your favorite lecture of the week
Very eye–opening, and you learn a few key concepts quite well so you can brag to your friends about being a chocolate expert. The chocolate tastings are FANTASTIC and Dr. Martin is amazing!
Go to lecture and section since they are strict about attendance. It's not a hard class though – interesting for sure nevertheless.
Take it!!!!***
The course's material, at face value, is absolutely scintillating. Dr. Martin does a fantastic job generating enthusiasm on topics related to chocolate and cacao. She is one of the best, most engaging lecturers at Harvard. I think the assignments are less exciting and having three exams was unnecessarily anxiety inducing for such a fun class. All in all, you should take the class! Just know you'll probably always have an exam to study for which is kinda annoying, but the course content is second to none.
I thought the anti–colonial biases were very pervasive in this course and felt alienating towards people of non–African culture. The lecture I felt this the most was on advertising – it seemed like the message there was white people cannot possibly advertise a product produced by Africans properly, so the only solution is to let the Africans advertise themselves. I also thought that the over the top mourning by Professor Martin of former President Gay was too much, and that Professor Martin turned a non–racial issue into a racial one.
Take this course!!!!! It is so much fun, Professor Martin is amazing. The tasting are awesome, the work is manageable. 100% a must–take at Harvard.
Awesome awesome awesome class! Course staff is so welcoming, course load is low (just do the readings and go to class), assignments and tests are fair, and the content is really applicable to our society, history, and global dynamics generally. GEM!
You get from this class what you put in. It's pretty easy to coast if you wish, but the course materials are also interesting if you buy in. The teaching staff are really kind people and want everyone to succeed. There are also fun tastings in class!
Take this class! It isn't as riveting as you might think – it goes into the history of chocolate and issues like child labor. But the teaching staff is just extraordinary. I have never seen such a passionate group of people. Margaret–Ann was simply the BEST TF EVER!
