| This class is great! The teaching staff is so kind and helpful and you get to eat chocolate! |
| This class is great, but not as gemmy as you think it is. You have to do the readings for the quizzes (which are tough btw) and theres over 100 pages of readings per week. Carla is great, but def take this class with friends as a senior. |
| More work than I thought it would be. Around 100 (sometimes more) pages of reading each week, the two quizzes were unnecessarily difficult and often mentioned material (names, dates), only brought up briefly in lecture. Tastings were cool, but not very frequent. The material was generally interesting, and Carla is a good lecturer, but not the easy 4th class I was hoping it would be. |
| This class is a gem!! TRULY!! All of the teaching staff are passionate about the material, and you will look forward to learning something new during lecture and section. I took this as a fifth class, and it was totally doable. |
| Take the course and do the readings! You will definitely learn a lot about chocolate and the history of chocolate, and Dr. Martin is a fantastic lecturer. |
| I was 100% take this corse. It is very manageable and interesting. The professor and TF's are exceptional and care a lot. Along as you give effort to exams and assignment you will do well in the class. The test are fair and they prepare you well from lecture and section. |

| Highly recommend this course! The content is super fun and interesting. At times it can feel slightly intuitive, but it's still cool to get to be learning this content for a class. The tests and assignments were all super fair – it's not no work, but it was definitely manageable and I really enjoyed. And Professor Martin is super knowledgeable about the content and great to meet with! |

| Dr. Martin is a genuine expert on chocolate and clearly loves the subject, which makes the class engaging and fun. You’ll taste different chocolates, learn surprising history, and hear from guest experts, so it’s a great source of fun facts as well as insight into consumer and producer behavior over the past few centuries. The course is also relatively easy and very manageable workload‑wise. Just know that it approaches chocolate through a strongly anti‑imperial, left‑leaning lens, which some students may find less open to disagreement or alternative perspectives. |
| You should take this class if you want to learn about every aspect of chocolate history. It is really interesting. That being said, the quizzes are absolutely bonkers. I don't know why they are so damn difficult. |

| HIGHLY recommend taking this class as an elective! Super fun class where the teaching staff just wants you to succeed and enjoy the experience. Grades are very chill and you will actually learn some really interesting stuff if you pay attention |

| A senior spring must–have |
| Great senior spring class about chocolate. TASTINGS—every other class, maybe every three classes. Definitely not every time, but sometimes they're very good. We had *custom* bonbons made for us by a renowned NYC confectioner, for instance. Margaret Ann is the best TF in the world—ask her about BunnyBear. This isn't the world's most challenging class, but I genuinely learned a lot about the history and politics of chocolate—colonial economics, pre–Columbian societies, labor rights, environmentalism, health issues, sexism and racism in advertizing. |
| This course is good. You learn everything about the chocolate industry, so if you really like chocolate, take it! I loved learning about it, and I love learning about how I can be a better consumer. A lot of this content feels like something everybody should know but that big corporations purposefully keep us in the dark about (i.e., child labor). Take it! |

| This is a great course, though you get out what you put into it. Dr. Martin is wonderful, so enthusiastic and knowledgeable about this topic, plus cares about her students. I was so impressed by her support for workers/teaching staff during the HGSU strike. She puts her teachings into practice, and there are often tastings / guest lectures which are engaging. |
