A wonderful class with fantastic teaching staff! I looked forward to this class weekly.
This class was such a different format and experience from anything else I have taken. It felt like watching Professors Stauffer and Unger record a podcast together. Occasionally there would be participation from the students, and this could get interesting (it's a mix of undergrads, law students, and divinity school students, so potential for a good variety of perspectives and methodologies). The weeks alternated between topics in Stauffer's area of expertise and in Unger's. I much preferred both the readings and discussion for Stauffer's weeks to Unger's, probably because I'm much more of a history and literature person than philosophy. To be honest, I mostly zoned out through Unger's weeks. If that sounds like you, I might recommend taking one of Stauffer's other classes instead (although I haven't taken any, so can't say more). The class was both interesting and very very easy ––– I added it as a fifth class, and it was a lovely way to spend my Friday early afternoons. I would do the (short but great) readings over lunch. Essays were easy A's, but we did actually get detailed feedback from Stauffer. I enjoyed revisiting some of my favorite American authors from the nineteenth century. The professors are both getting older. It's insanely cool to talk to them about their wealth of knowledge and experience. They and the class do, however, move at a slower pace to what you might be used to.
Take this class. Super interesting if you allow yourself to properly engage with the material. Stauffer is the goat.
Coming from an an undergrad premed take this class if you are: 1) interested at all in the development and evolution of american democracy 2) a premed looking for a second semester english class (2 midterm essays and 1 final paper make 90% of the grade + 10% participation) very manageable 3) looking to add a 5th class for the semester (only meets once a week for 2hrs and optional/personally scheduled section) 4) interested to see harvard professors discuss topics that they are experts in 5) know a lot about frederick douglass and can make any connection back to him (stauffer will love this) 4) You're a huge history buff
