This class is a pleasant beginning to the week, and prioritizes listening intently as an alternative to understanding critical geography, and cultural production.
Take this class! Even without a music background I was able to appreciate the deep depth of the diasporic music found across the world. I learned more about African cultures but was also exposed to a lot of music and made connections that I would've never really thought about making. Monson and Terry are very passionate about the topics and I think that helps a lot. Everyone in the class is also very talented!
***TAKE IT! If you truly love jazz or music in general, you should take it. The readings are good but if you didn't finish them it's okay. Professor Terry and Monson are sweethearts as well as Christina. I took it not knowing how to play an instrument and having 0 technical skills in music or composing or signing. However, I left the course feeling like an equal to any other musician without having to pick up an instrument!
This is suchhh a great class! The content is super intersting, learning about where modern jazz came from and the context of how music has been passed down and preserved even through slavery, and how slavery in different countries impacted how music sounds in each of these countries. Also, if you are musically inclined, this is a great opportunity to show that off and experiment with different music styles!
This class is fantastic! Though I wish we listened to more music, I left with a wealth of knowledge I didn't have before. The professors are passionate and engaging, and section is also incredibly helpful for making the most out of the course content. The assignments are also meaningful towards your learning, and the workload is very manageable.
I would definitely take this course if you are looking to have insightful discussions on the roots of popular music, wanting to learn more about the history and culture of the African diaspora, or need new music to add to a playlist.
You will get out what you put in! The professors take a lot of time to put in great listenings and readings, but if you don't take the time to engage with the materials, you won' t maximize your learning and familiarize yourself with the music and artists that can be really moving
