This is a great course, especially if you like to combine historical context with US political structures/systems. You have to be willing to challenge yourself and be innovative, ask a lot of questions as this is a still developing field. But Prof. Skocpol is extremely interested in this work and is super enthusiastic about it. If you show enthusiasm and curiosity, you will really get a lot out of this course. But as Prof. Skocpol says, “this is not a gut.” She expects you to come into class with discussion questions and having done the reading. So only take this class if you are willing to put in the effort and engage in lively discussion every week.
Take this class if you would like to learn about a relatively understudied field of history! Most of the readings you will encounter in this course will likely be material you are reading for the first time, which makes it more enjoyable. Professor Skocpol is an excellent professor who is a leading scholar in this work, so she will also help you create research if your interest extends beyond the assignments for this class.
I not only learned about the intersection between Government, African–American history, and sociology, but I learned about a very niche topic such as these fraternal orders that I knew nothing about going into the class. I learned how important these orders were to African–American life, especially in the post–reconstruction era of the United States. I also learned how complex these orders were in terms of civic engagement, economic engagement and stability, black youth development, and political change. However, I think most of all, I learned how to participate in and prepare for a government seminar–style class, how to ask investigative and thoughtful questions, and how to complete a lengthy research paper and proposal.
This is a great course and a super niche topic. Professor Skocpol is an expert in this field. The research she has done is truly amazing, and a loved working on a little slice of this history.
