Take the class and bring your A game.

Professor Terry is really one of the smartest people you can engage with at Harvard. The wide breadth and depth of his intellectual fortitude is like no one I've ever met. And, he has that gift of making a seminar feel truly productive, generative, and novel as it progresses because of how well he understands and can engage with comments critically. If you wanna get smart, take a class of his. And if you want to take serious the contributions of Civil Rights era leaders to Political Philosophy, this is really the best way to do so. There are few people who put theory in perspective like Terry, but applied here, it is particularly potent. I left this class smarter. DO THE READINGS THOUGH! Terry is so nice that some people definitely get away without it, but he can tell, and so can everyone. This is an opportunity for you to be a deep and critical thinker about memory, resistance, race, solidarity, propaganda, and legacy.

Take this class! There are a lot of readings but they're all very good and I suggest you try to get through most of them. Also, you should speak up in the class to synthesize your ideas with an argument for your paper. It is a lot of work but I think it's important to get figures such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X right so as to argue alongside their terms, rather than miscontrue it. I highly enjoyed Professor Terry and Yi Ning's leading of the seminars.

Prof Terry is amazing. His attention to the syllabus and various learning experiences (field trips, movie screenings, critical discussions) is incredible. Must do the readings to fully engage and I promise you, you are going to want to be able to participate!

If you have the opportunity to take any course with Professor Terry, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND it. I do not think I have taken many classes with a professor who is as attentive or cares about the actual learning experience of students.

Take this class!! It’s engaging, thought–provoking, and inspiring. Whether you already know a lot about Black history and the civil rights movement or are just starting out, this course will challenge you, energize you, and leave you wanting to learn more. Come ready to participate, reflect, and dive into discussions—you’ll get so much out of it.

The Philosophy and Politics of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. is a course worth taking. The rich discussion and insightful thoughts generated throughout the course enabled me and my class mates to think critically about the readings and how they shape the world around us and offer meaning–making.

I rarely ever say this, and as a senior, that means a lot, but please take this course! I have no idea if it'll be taught again, but it may be the best course I've taken at Harvard. The readings while extremely long (200–400 pages at times), are so so compelling, and you feel the desire to actually finish them! Professor Terry is a world class lecturer and facilitator of discussion, perhaps one of the best to ever do it, he weaves narrative and history into a course that honestly could just be a political theory survey course if it wanted to be. Field trip integration makes it even better!

Take this class. Make sure to try and do all of the readings.

Take it! One of the best courses I took at Harvard. Professor Terry does an incredible job and he's both really knowledgeable and approachable. The discussions were great, and we really took MLK and Malcolm X seriously as political philosophers, which is something you don't often see.
